How long does each one last in Minnesota?
Published lifespans put asphalt at 15 to 20 years and concrete at 30 to 40 years. Both numbers assume the driveway was built right and maintained.
Asphalt reaches the top of its range only with discipline. It wants sealcoating every 3 to 5 years, crack filling as cracks appear, and a resurfacing overlay around year 10 to 15. Skip the sealing and industry sources call it a 12 year driveway.
Concrete reaches its range with less attention, and the attention is cheaper. Sealing every 5 to 10 years, joint caulk checked every few years, and salt kept off the surface in the first winters. The failure mode for concrete is not age. It is a bad base or a bad mix, and both are decided before the truck shows up.
Which one handles freeze-thaw and salt better?
This is where Minnesota changes the answer, and both sides of the argument are true.
Asphalt’s case. It is flexible. When frost heaves the ground, asphalt bends a little instead of cracking, and it shrugs off road salt. Its dark surface also warms faster in winter sun and melts snow sooner. That is why it is the default on Minnesota roads and why many northern contractors reach for it on long rural driveways.
Concrete’s case. Concrete built to the cold-climate spec handles freeze-thaw well. That spec is 4,000 PSI concrete with 5 to 7 percent entrained air, a compacted aggregate base of 4 to 8 inches, and control joints sawcut so the slab cracks where it is told to. The entrained air gives freezing water room to expand inside the slab. Concrete poured without it scales within a few winters, and that is the concrete most people picture when they say concrete cracks up here.
Salt. Deicing salt is harder on concrete than on asphalt, especially in the first two winters while the surface is still gaining strength. Sand for traction, or a salt-free deicer, keeps a new concrete driveway out of trouble. Asphalt tolerates salt but softens in July heat, and a trailer parked in the same spot all summer leaves a dent.
Plows. A steel plow blade gouges asphalt and skates over concrete. If a plow service clears your driveway, that favors concrete.

Concrete saves roughly $700 to $1,200 over 30 years in that model, and a second 2026 analysis widens the gap to $1,500 to $2,000 once asphalt needs a full replacement inside the window. - You want to pour it once and mostly forget it.
