Brick & Masonry Repair in Minneapolis, MN

Brick Repair · Minneapolis, MN

Repairs That Disappear Into the Wall

Brick repair covers everything between a loose brick and a full rebuild: cutting out spalled and cracked units and setting matched replacements, stitching step cracks, rebuilding bowed or frost-heaved sections, and restoring the porch piers, steps and foundation walls that Minnesota winters hit hardest. Around Minneapolis, Bloomington, Burnsville and across the Twin Cities metro, the housing stock runs old and brick — and old brick deserves repair that blends in, not patchwork you can see from the curb.

The judgment call is knowing where repair ends. A wall with a few spalled faces gets unit replacement; a wall shedding faces across its whole surface has a water problem that unit replacement will not solve. We diagnose the cause — failed joints, a missing cap, grade against the brick — fix that first, then repair the damage so it does not come straight back.

Spalling: What It Is and What It Means

When the face of a brick pops off — spalling — it is freeze-thaw finishing a job that water started. Moisture gets behind the face through failed joints, saturated walls or bad grading, freezes, and blows the face off from inside. One or two spalled bricks are routine maintenance. A wall freckled with them is telling you where water lives, and that is the problem we solve first.

Replacement is surgical: cut the failed unit out clean, match the new brick to size, color and texture, set it with matched mortar, and strike the joint to profile. Done right across a repair area, you will lose track of which bricks are new — which is the standard we hold the work to.

Porches, Steps and the Parts Winters Eat First

Brick porch piers, knee walls and front steps live in the splash zone — snow piled against them, deicing salt working the mortar, water cycling through every thaw. They fail earlier than the house behind them, and because they are structural, a settled pier or hollow step is worth attention beyond looks. We rebuild piers plumb, reset stone caps, and rebuild steps with risers even and treads pitched to drain.

The same goes for garden walls and foundation courses. Where sections have moved or bowed, we take them down to sound masonry and relay — reusing original brick where it is still good, blending matched units where it is not.

From One Wall to a Whole Building

The photos on this page are the honest version of the work: walls that had lost brick, mortar and straightness, taken down to sound masonry and rebuilt to match the original — stone lintels reset, new units blended into hundred-year-old neighbors. That before-and-after is the trade in one image.

When damage runs building-wide — apartment blocks, storefronts, schools — the same repair craft scales up under our commercial restoration work, with lifts, scaffolds and phased scopes. Start with photos of what you are seeing and we will tell you which side of that line your wall is on.

How We Work

How a Job With Metro Masonry Runs

From the first look at the site to the final walk-through, here is exactly how it goes.

1

See It on the Wall

We assess the masonry where it lives — what failed, why, and how far it has spread. On commercial buildings that means getting on the wall, not a drive-by.

2

Written, Prioritized Scope

You get a written price with the must-fix separated from the can-wait, so the budget goes where the wall needs it. Timelines and access logistics are spelled out up front.

3

We Do the Work

Matched materials, full joints, proper crowns, real bases and drainage. Occupied buildings stay open, sites get protected, and cleanup happens every day — not just the last one.

4

Closeout Walk

We walk the finished work together — joints, matches, cleanup, the whole scope. Done means you have looked at every part of it and said so.

What does brick repair cost in the Twin Cities?
Unit replacement and crack repair are modest, day-scale jobs; rebuilding bowed sections or porch piers scales with size and access. Every estimate is written from the actual wall — what failed, why, and what it takes to keep the repair from repeating.
Can you match hundred-year-old brick?
Almost always closely enough that the repair disappears. Old brick varies in size and color, so matching is sourcing plus blending — distributing replacements through the repair area rather than clustering them. Mortar color and joint profile get matched with the same care.
Why are my bricks flaking apart?
That is spalling — water inside the brick freezing and popping the face off. The brick is the symptom; the water path is the cause, usually failed joints, a missing cap or crown, or grade and salt against the wall. We fix the path, then the brick, or the damage returns.
Is a stair-step crack serious?
It can be. Step cracks follow mortar joints and often trace foundation movement or a failed lintel. Hairline and stable is one story; widening, offset or paired with a bowed wall is another. Send photos — we will tell you honestly whether it needs structural attention or joint repair.
Do you rebuild brick steps and porch piers?
Yes — constantly. Steps and piers take the worst of Minnesota winters and deicing salt. We rebuild them plumb and solid, reset stone caps, and match the brick so the new work belongs to the house. If the footing under them has failed, we address that too.

Why Choose Metro

Why the Twin Cities Call Metro Masonry

Restoration Is the Trade

Rebuilding walls, chimneys and facades is not a sideline here — it is the core of the work. Matched brick, matched mortar, proper crowns and full joints, because that is why masonry lasts.

Built for Minnesota

Freeze-thaw is the enemy of every wall in this state. Crowns that shed, joints struck to drain, air-entrained concrete, drainage behind every wall — details chosen for this climate, not a milder one.

Written, Prioritized Scopes

We assess on the wall, separate must-fix from can-wait, and put price and timeline in writing. Owners and property managers can phase budgets instead of getting one take-it-or-leave-it number.

Commercial-Grade Crew

Occupied buildings, lifts and scaffolds, site protection and daily cleanup — we run residential jobs with the same discipline as a church tower, because the standard should not change with the address.
