Shakopee is two brick towns in one, and repointing them takes two different mortars. The historic core along the Minnesota River holds 19th-century storefronts, churches and houses laid in soft lime-based mortar. Ring outward to Southbridge and the south side and the brick is builder-grade, laid in modern mortar within the last twenty years. Both kinds of joints fail in Minnesota's 80 to 100 freeze-thaw cycles a year. They fail on different schedules, and the wrong mortar on either one causes more damage than it fixes.
Our tuckpointing in Shakopee starts with the mortar match. On downtown brick we gauge the original and mix to match its hardness, color and joint profile, and we build a sample panel before the wall gets touched. On newer homes the match is simpler, but the depth is not: joints get ground to sound depth, never skimmed. A skim of new mortar over failed joints looks fine for a season and fails within a few winters.

Mortar is meant to be softer than the brick it holds, so movement and moisture wear the joint instead of the face. The 1800s brick along First Avenue and through Old Shakopee is soft by modern standards. Repoint it with a portland-heavy mix and the joints survive while the brick faces pop off within a few winters. Spalled brick cannot be repointed back. It has to be cut out and replaced, which turns a maintenance job into a brick repair project.
We match lime content, color and joint profile to the original, then tool the new joints to the same shape. Done right, the repair disappears into the wall. Twenty-year-old brick in Southbridge and along the south side is entering its first repointing cycle. The weather faces go first, especially on the exposed lots near Dean Lake where wind-driven rain hits the same wall all year. Joints recess, soften and start shedding sand at the base of the wall. Catching that early is cheap. Waiting until brick faces flake is not.
We repoint by the wall, not by the house. A weather-face elevation can be done alone while the sheltered sides wait, and we flag the rest with a timeline.
