We scaffold the stack, strip the failed masonry course by course, and stop where the brick and mortar are still sound. Then the chimney goes back up plumb and square, with full mortar joints, a bond that matches the original, and a crown cast in place with an overhang and drip edge so water sheds away from the brick instead of running down its face.
The crown is where most chimneys fail first, so we do not shortcut it. A proper crown is concrete, not a smear of mortar; it is thick at the center, pitched to drain, and isolated from the flue so the two can move independently. Add a stainless cap over each flue and the rebuild is protected at the exact points the old chimney failed. When the brick below is still sound and only the top has gone, crown-only repair is the smaller job.
A chimney rises straight through the most visible plane of the roof, so a mismatched rebuild announces itself from the street. We source brick to match size, color range and texture, and tune the mortar color so new work reads as original. On older Minneapolis housing stock with discontinued brick, we blend, pulling the closest match and distributing it so the new work does not read as a patch.
