Walkways and steps are the most used masonry on any property in Minneapolis, Bloomington, Burnsville and across the Twin Cities metro. Every guest, delivery and winter boot crosses them. We build them to take that use: concrete walks on compacted base, flagstone paths set to stay put, and brick or stone front steps with even risers and treads pitched so meltwater drains instead of icing.
Steps are also where safety and structure meet. A settled bottom step, a rocking tread or a hollow-sounding stoop is a liability every winter morning. We rebuild front steps on proper footings, with solid concrete cores faced in brick or stone where the house calls for it, and tie walks, stoops and landscape walls into one approach.

Stairs have rules: risers within a small tolerance of each other, treads deep enough for a real foot, and a slight pitch that sheds water without feeling sloped. Miss the tolerances and every user senses it. Miss them badly and someone trips. We form and build steps to those numbers, on footings that keep the bottom step from sinking into the yard by next spring.
Facing is where the house gets a say. A poured concrete stoop is clean and durable; brick or stone facing over a concrete core matches an older house the way it deserves. Caps and treads in stone finish the look and take the wear at the nosing, where steps age first.
A walkway is a small slab with the same enemies as a driveway: soft base, trapped water, frost. We excavate, compact, and pour concrete walks with joints laid out to control cracking, or set flagstone on a base built for it so the path does not become a rocking, weed-filled hazard within a few seasons.
Heaved and settled walks are one of our most common replacement calls, and the cause is under the surface every time. We fix the base, then the walk. Where tree roots are the culprit, we reroute or bridge rather than pouring a slab the roots will lift again.
For garden paths, patio connections and entries where poured concrete feels too plain, natural flagstone is the better choice: irregular stones fitted tight, joints dressed clean, and the whole field set so chairs do not rock and heels do not catch.
