Minneapolis is a masonry city. Its housing stock runs deep into the 1900s to 1920s: brick foursquares and bungalow chimneys in Longfellow, Powderhorn and Nokomis, and brick apartment blocks through Uptown and Whittier. Minneapolis masonry is original work that has been through a hundred winters. Mortar joints from the 1920s have given all they have, chimneys stand at the intersection of age and weather, and the brick veneers, porch piers and foundation courses of the city's classic housing stock fail wherever water has found a path.
