By the time a truck backs in, the job is mostly decided. We excavate to stable soil, build a compacted base, set forms to the grades water actually needs, and place reinforcement where the slab calls for it. Skipping any of that shows up within a few winters as settling, ponding or random cracking, the most common Twin Cities flatwork failures.
Minnesota adds its own spec: air-entrained concrete, proper curing time before the slab sees load, and sealed surfaces before the first deicer season. We schedule pours around weather windows and finish to the surface the use calls for — a broom finish outside for grip, or a steel-trowel finish in a shop.
Garage, shop and outbuilding slabs are working floors: vehicles, hoists, equipment, point loads. We thicken edges, size the mix and reinforcement to the use, and cut joints on a layout that keeps inevitable shrinkage cracks inside straight lines. If a floor drain or pitch to the door matters, it gets formed in from the start.
We also replace what has failed. Heaved sidewalk panels, sunken patio corners, scaling surfaces from years of salt: we cut out, correct the base problem underneath, and pour back to match the surrounding work as closely as concrete allows.
A concrete patio is the most durable option for outdoor living in the Twin Cities, poured to drain and finished in broom, trowel or exposed texture. It pairs well with a masonry seat wall.
Concrete steps and stoops get the same structural attention as slabs: proper footings so they stop sinking away from the door, risers even course to course, treads pitched to shed.
